Naturalist Series: Lichens of Kentucky with Kendall McDonald
In-PersonLearn about the Lichens of Kentucky with Kendall McDonald!
Last Revised: Feb 28th, 2024
Event Description
Join Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves botanist and lichenologist Kendall McDonald on March 7th to explore the diverse world of Kentucky’s lichens. Did you know that lichens are composite organisms that arise from the symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae? Lichens are often overlooked and grow all around us – on rocks, trees, and soil. Though they might look similar from a distance, they are incredibly diverse and each has specific growing requirements. This event will begin with a brief indoor introduction to the life, history, and biology of lichens and then move outdoors to find lichens in The Arboretum’s native plant collection. Participants will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with these unique life forms while learning some distinctive characteristics for identification.
Advance registration required.
$10 program fee. Advance payment is not needed, you can pay upon arrival at The Arboretum. Email arboretum@uky.edu to reserve your spot, or stop in our Visitor Center.
